I like all (well, most) of the folks you mentioned, but for me Hendrix is in an entirely different category. I think perhaps he was from Trippin' Tom's neck of the woods, because clearly he was not an earthling.

When you listen to the direction of Band of Gypsies and then the various LPs and CDs with tunes such as "HeyBaby," "Earth Blues," "Pali Gap" and the Neptune and Saturn stuff, it is almost frightening to imagine where he would have gone in various directions -- jazz, funk, rock, psychedelia.

Jimi was here briefly. He was an alien, in a sense of being like only a handful of people at his level.

Garcia was an institution; the greatest live band leader. He was prolific; here a relatively long time.

Here's one that was on a roll to write a lot more songs before an early departure... Jim Croce.

My record store in Tampa (74-78) used to see bootlegs. The jim Croce one, post mortem, was entitled "Dead Men Still Tell Tales."
