DOWNTOWN RIVER JAM, TAMPA 12.07.13

Me: Everything is WAAAAAY too loud!

You: IF IT’S TOO LOUD, YOU’RE TOO OLD! BWA! HA! HA!

Me: How very clever, amusing and original!

Now, explain to me how “louder” makes it ”better.” Is it better when:

[a] the bass vibrates the booths in the bar?
[b] your ears ring for hours the next day?
[c] you need ear plugs to try to prevent permanent ear damage?
[d] you cannot communicate with those around you without shouting?
[e] keyboard and saxophone tones distort?
[f] vocals are virtually unintelligible?

Your turn!

Sorry to heat that, TieYourShoes...

It was loud for the Lauderdale Live thing, but not *too* loud. The truly awful thing was the n*a*z*i cops pulling the plug on the sound system WHILE Lyle Lovett was playing. First the left side was turned off... then the right... then the stage monitors went off... So no encore... yeah he started a few minutes late, but evidently it's a capital offense in FtL for there to be amplified music past 9PM on a Sunday night.

:x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x

After Lyle and band had wandered off stage and I had confirmed at the board what the cops had done, I walked up to the stage and told the city of FtL what they could do; it involved body parts. This was done loudly and with malice. My wife said I nearly got arrested. I'm still pissed.

A f&cking multiple Grammy award winning artist, and one of the classiest guys in the music business, and they pulled the plug on him. Nice job, guys.

Onward, I suppose... :|

DISPLACE
11.23.13 The Crowbar, Ybor City
12.14.13 Yeoman’s Road Pub, Davis Island

Those of you who have suffered through my past missives know I like words, lots of words, especially adjectives. And superlatives.

So the word for the day is exceptional. “Exceptional” is my view of Displace, “an eclectic four-piece that plays space-fink dance-disco jams.” Well, that is a quote from their website. I would say it is entirely accurate.

We first saw Displace open for the Malah at the Crowbar in November. They came out throwing down hard, mindful of their tight time limit and feeding off the energy of the boisterous Crowbar-ites. It was a superb performance. At the center of the maelstrom was Chris Sgammato, a triple-threat on alto sax, guitar and vocals. The music was strong, raucous and delicious! Linda and I definitely wanted more.

So we headed to Yeoman’s Road Pub on Davis Island last night for round two. As we arrived, Displace was jamming on a lanky, bouncy take on “Cissy Strut,” which then segued several times through really funky jams. In the intimate setting at Yeoman’s, the first thing that emerged for me was how talented each member of the quartet is. Drummer Tucker Sody drives the jams relentlessly with his funky beats, and then it was Vinny Svoboda’s bass that stood out.

Sgammatto was moving effortlessly back and forth from alto to guitar and back. More than anything this night, however, I was blown out by Sam Dobkin’s fabulous guitar solos and chunky, funky chords. These boys can jam!

Much of the second set struck me as very Zappa-esque, and I say that as the greatest compliment I can offer. Dobkin on guitar and Sgammato on alto sax wrangled and parried, and then Sgammato would switch to guitar, and they would launch out in another direction. It was one fabulous night. Exceptional. That’s the word.

And, if you like what you hear, vote for them to go to AURA (visit their Facecrack page: https://www.facebook.com/events/229220887254437/

I received a very courteous reply from the Downtown River Jam organizers. They acknowledged first-time difficulties and things beyond their control. It was still a great event, and I will always support local endeavors (just got my Hometeam Rally tickets last night!).

But it WAS unnecessarily loud!
