I have never had a problem in the VIP section in front of the Peach stage. I will say that many of the VIP folks are much worse chair-wise than in general. On the other hand, I never have any problem suatting in somebody's chair until the rightful owner shows up, which, remarkably, is almost never. I don't get that.

At 62, with bad knees, I love my chair, but it has never intruded (OK, ONE time, and boy did I learn my lesson!).

I never took a chair to the stage area. But I sat in many of them. It was either that or stand on them. Sometimes, a whole show would come and go without the chair owner ever showing up.
Maybe if all the chairs were removed same time the Roadies removing all the band's equipment, folks wouldn't drop a chair in the morning and expect it to save a spot for a night show.

why are chairs any worse than laying out a blanket to reserve space?

I would say, try to do the twist and shake your ass on top of a camping chair, now do that on top of a blanket. ;)

As far as chairs are concerned...

I usually get close to the tapers, right of the sound board.

My pet peeve is when people park the chairs and walk away.
If you have people staying with them, that's one thing.
But to see rows of parked chairs when people are looking for a spot to see the music... That's wrong.

Just my opinion...

:)

Answer: Chair squat ;)

As a longtime SOSMP patron, going to the Magnolia events, there's a long standing informal 'rule' about the chairs for those fests: Set yours where you please, but it's available for anyone to use, if you aren't there using it. The implied rule is be nice, and don't get wound up if someone is lounging in your chair, just ask for it back. Accordingly, don't be a tool when someone reclaims their chair; be appreciative that it was there for you to rest in for a spell. Works very well. One time I had a dolt do minor damage my chair, but after 10+ years it's a pretty foolproof approach.

While there's lots of younger folks (well, younger than *me*, which is an increasingly larger & larger segment of the festy audience :P ) at Wanee, there's definitely a segment that skews older, in some cases nearly as old as some of the Brothers even :o :D ... so chairs are just gonna be part of the experience. I find I can no longer stand for hours to catch music. Just how it is, for me.

That said, I stick my chair near the board at the Peach stage. I do think it's sort of rude to plop your chair two feet from the picket fence... but I'm not gonna vote for more rules... we go to festivals to get away from most of the idiotic social customs and rules for a time, and be a bit more free than the regular world lets us... keep the rules simple and few, and let kindness rule rather than a rule book... :geek:
