DOWNTOWN RIVER JAM, TAMPA 12.07.13

Me: Everything is WAAAAAY too loud!

You: IF IT’S TOO LOUD, YOU’RE TOO OLD! BWA! HA! HA!

Me: How very clever, amusing and original!

Now, explain to me how “louder” makes it ”better.” Is it better when:

[a] the bass vibrates the booths in the bar?
[b] your ears ring for hours the next day?
[c] you need ear plugs to try to prevent permanent ear damage?
[d] you cannot communicate with those around you without shouting?
[e] keyboard and saxophone tones distort?
[f] vocals are virtually unintelligible?

Your turn!

[g] the bass is strong enough to resonate in your chest, giving the feel that 'I need to cough' .

Frequently happened at the 2 stages next to the amphitheater.

Ear plugs are a necessity for me. I carry MANY extra for others concerned.
The saddest thing I saw were two (owners/trainers??) with a pair of golden lab guide dogs in the music hall. poor dogs were head-in-lap, tail at half mast " WHY are you doing this to me? I accept it, but CAN WE GO?!? " ( I speak Dog :) )

[d][e][f] above I find true, and think it is our 'mics' (ears) overloading from the SPL (sound pressure level). The sound with earplugs in was *much* better, save for losing the high end crispness. The mics on the tapers rigs can handle it. I listen to the music from the event later to see what it sounded like. While I am there it is more the camping and scenery, as the music indeed is SO F'N LOUD as to be unintelligible and not too enjoyable.

I forgot ear plugs for Stephen Marley (!) a few weeks back. I was there, recording, and was less than 10 feet from my rig all the time. I find that the recording sounds clearer and more balanced (sounds "better" if you will) than the live performance. I found this also at The Henegar Center with Atlanta Rhythm Section - I could hardly make out the vocals while at the concert. At home listening to the recording... much better.

Unfortunately it is likely not to change. For those who it is too loud, the complaints are responded to as you put in the beginning.. "" You: IF IT’S TOO LOUD, YOU’RE TOO OLD! BWA! HA! HA! "" Whereas if the bass SPL is less than frog-sterilizing levels, and the kick drum doesnt part your hair, there will always be complaints ( LOUD complaints.. they cant hear well  ) about how 'Its just not ROCKIN man' 'My car stereo does better than this' .

Now keep in mind these complainers are prolly the same folk that wake at a party when someone turns the music down at 3AM. They then arise, turn it back up, and pass back out. Just a part of the whole experience.

I may bring my SPL meter with me next festy for sh*ts and giggles. See how far over the OSHA limit it is. :) But the only way to really change it is to be "THAT GUY" and start making comments about liability of the promoter, etc. And we DONT need that. NO.
I dont think that the park or promoter could even supply ear plugs as you walk in, as this would imply they are aware that a health hazard exists, etc etc. For now, its the 800Lb gorilla.

* well, this post turned into a book! SOZ!!

I got a truly nice response from the festival organizers. this festival will happen again, and they know the things they want to fix. Naturally, several factors careened out of their control at the last moment. But this was a great attempt to get more of our music out into the public eye and ear -- thousands of passersby saw us inside the gates having a great time.
