Ok TYS, I will bite. I won tickets to a show last week that I would not have purchased - Foreigner. No original members but a very good group of musicians - they even jammed a few times rather than just played the hits. Many people my age  had a good time with so many familiar songs. I was shocked how much my wife enjoyed it - but I always thought of Foreigner as a chick band, like Journey. Anyway, it was a fun evening of music for free.

About one marriage ago, my now-ex and her buddies wanted to go see Loggins and Messina. I coughed up more money that I ever had for tickets and even kvetched to my brother (and she found out). I would never had picked this, even for free.

Boy, was I wrong! They were spectacular! Amazing. They had a young dude who could play anything with strings. We heard him on guitar, mandolin, violin and pedal steel. And then, early in the first set, the bass player had stomach flu and was gone for the night. Whatever would they do? STRING DUDE TO THE RESCUE! He never missed a single note (well, insofar as I could tell).

Does anybody know who this cat was? Would have been 2005 or so in Clearwater.

The show got off to a rocky start because during "Back To Georgia" the bass player fell ill and left the stage. This necessitated an early intermission while they decided how to carry on without half of the rhythm section. When the concert continued they went into acoustic mode which included a song from Messina's Poco days (You Better Think Twice) as well as a Buffalo Springfield song (Kind Woman). While Loggins and Messina performed on acoustic guitars they were very relaxed and jovial. It had the effect of sitting around a living room listening to them talk and play. When they returned to electric mode the fiddle player, Gabe Witcher, took over bass guitar duties and did more than an admirable job.

Steve Distanislao - drums
Steve Nieves - sax, percussion
Gabe Dixon - keyboards
Shem Schroeck - bass (disc 1 tracks 1 - 10)
Jeff Nathanson - sax & EWI
Gabe Witcher - fiddle, dobro, bass (disc 2 tracks 4 - 13)

I'm hiring YOU when I need detective work done! WOW.

The reviewer agrees with me.

And that was one badass version of Angry Eyes!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Reviewing concerts is actually part of my job. Last one was the Eagles in Jacksonville (good show, but they kept Joe Walsh on a leash for too long). Sometimes it's a great job; other times I see Barry Manilow or Justin Bieber.

Great "last" review for percussionist Joe Lala. The only time I saw him was with Stills (Stills was also from Tampa) on 05/01/07 at the Tampa Theatre.
