I saw a band at the Dunedin Brewery last night that belongs in the same conversation with Snarky Puppy. Six young New Orleans boys playing the tightest, slammin'-est jazzy funk or funky jazz possible. The YouTube stuff is ok, but you don't get a sense of the syncopation and the three horns romping and stomping together.

Think Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers through to Lettuce and Karl Denson and Snarky Puppy. I will have a review up by Saturday. ASTOUNDING!

Future Vintage had a great show last night in St. Pete. I'm working on that review -- and five others.

Meanwhile, I am reposting this review of the 1976 Zappa show in Tampa -- with photos from Fred Bellet.

Nice Zappa review!! It's good that you gave it serious consideration, since it's so easy (and certainly in the 1970s, was the rule rather than the exception) to just go to your favorite level of addled with your favorite substances, and be confounded and amused at Zappa's extravaganza.

It's far too easy for the casual observer to be overwhelmed by FZ's deadly combination of incredibly talented rock & roll orchestra, potty humor, tendency to eff with the roles (& rules) between performer vs. audience, and occasional (& sometimes magical) guitar indulgences. He almost always had a well oiled machine, that was ready and able to respond should he call for a musical hairpin turn or three, if that was his whim.

I think I saw him only a couple times... wish it had been more. I knew he was fun and brilliant, but some of his stuff was beyond the understanding of a stringy haired Midwestern rock'n'roll kid.

500 years from now, the names that will be discussed from the last hundred years worth of music will be very few indeed. The Beatles will be discussed; not sure if any other 'rock bands' will be. The only other names I can think of who are certain to be in the history books, are Charles Mingus and Frank Zappa.

Thank the deities for the youtubes and etc. out there to relive what FZ did. 8-)

Thank you! I was very fortunate to have seen him 11 times and interview him twice. The first five were all during my senior year at Lehigh (72-73). That encompassed the Grand Wazoo, the Petit Wazoo (twice), and the spring 73 band (twice). Just lucky, period.

Here is the link to my other Zappa review:

And working on Future Vintage from Saturday. I cannot say what I really want to say. Because...

the venue is one of several places that hires these bands I like and pays reasonably well, but almost none of the patrons pays any attention. I don't want to bite the hand that feeds them.

It's just so weird. At times there were only two of listening (really), and that was the keyboard player's wife and I, and yet they absolutely crushed the set!
