Post Who should join ABB?
OK, we know that Derek and Warren are leaving the Allmans at year's end, and that Gregg says the band will carry on.
So the big question is: With who?

What guitarists are out there that could fill those kind of shoes?

Do they kiss and make up with Dickey? Bring in some young slingers (Matt Schofield, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Joe Bonamassa, etc)? Raid someone else's band?

So who's your dream guitar team for the Allman Brothers band next year? (Oh, and they have to actually be alive to qualify.)

Nobody. I hope they let ABB pass on with dignity intact.

And really, Wayne?

Probably wont happen..but my picks are Devon Allman (brings in another Allman.. back to two) and back to Dickey Betts(brings back history to the table) IMHO I think this lineup would flourish if they could all get along.

I am kind of torn on whether or not the Allman Brothers should regroup at this stage in the game. With the exception of Dickey you cannot replace Warren and Derek so it would really have to be a whole new thing. Finding people to play the songs is one thing, finding people to take them where Derek and Warren go will be nearly impossible.

In all honesty I would almost rather see something along the lines of a Gregg and friends on stage doing some classic Allman and some stuff along the lines of Greggs Low Country Blues album. Every now and again bringing Warren or Derek back along with a host of others.

I just don't want to see the Allman's become a state fair act, it just would not be right.

Let the Brothers go out with dignity..
Gregg could form a band just as Phil and Bobby did after the Dead and keep the momentum going without dragging their act down. Lynyrd was given hell for having a band with only one original member and ABB should not go that route.
Gregg and Friends would be more serviceable than a band of misfits. Play a few ABB songs and some old Gregg material from solo acts and a little Low Country Blues stuff. I would be happier with that than an ABB with only 2-3 old guys.

I agree with Nole and the others who would like to let the memory rest. The discussion oftens sounds like a prize fighter past his prime thinking about making a comeback. Let ABB take its revered place with the Grateful Dead. Gregg and Friends would be very enjoyable -- and sustainable as long as GA wants it.
