Post Speaking of Live Oak...
My son, Spencer, lives in Tallahassee. Wednesday, he took his wife and daughter to Jacksonville to the airport. On his way home Wednesday night, he was near our beloved exit 283 when a panther ran out directly in front of him.

He did what every Hopkins would do: swerve to miss the animal. He swerved hard to the left and then tried to correct but swerving back to the right. By this time physics took over, and he ran off the road, down the embankment, and ended upside down in the ditch. Incredibly, there were no vehicles near him at the time. He said he had just passed a semi shortly before the accident!

Aside from bruises, he was unscathed; the car, not so much. It was a little something or other car, but it did exactly what it was designed to do in protecting him. He was able to call Live Oak 911 and got assistance. A true friend drove from Tallahassee to take him home.

Some might say he should not have swerved. It is possible he might have missed the panther, but [A] he didn't have time to think about that, and [B] he is a Hopkins. I think the damage to the vehicle and him would have been worse than the actual accident.

He said he saw the panther, instinctively swerved back and forth, and that the rest was as if in a dream: is this really happening?

My son is a truly great man. He has avoided the mistakes and vices of his father. The family belongs to a great vegan community, and his spirit is indefatigable.

I told him that there is a lot to be said about karma. I feel truly blessed that he is OK. He said his jacket, which had some polyester in it, has a burn mark made by the seat belt -- a souvenir!

And that reminds me of the time I was on the phone with my brother, who was on the road from Maryland to Indiana. We are just chatting when, all of a sudden, he screamed. A piece of metal about six inches wide and two feet long and thick enough blew off the truck in front of him and imbedded itself in his windshield. Fortunately, it did not go all the way through, and it was in the middle of the windshield, not directly in front of the driver's side. I have a photo some place that I will post.

Thanks for letting me share with my family.

As much as I love Animals, most accidents are cause by avoiding things in road! Statistics says so ;)

Thanks for sharing and happy all ended as well as expected.
My wife just killed her fourth deer with a car 2 weeks ago....got it out of the shop this morning for $3800+ out of our pocket.....cause her original insurance cancelled her policy after 2 kills and she doesn't want to lose this insurance as well...

Oh and she killed a panther going to the airport a few years back.
