Roger really looked old and you could tell he was struggling to
hit some of them notes, and some he just couldn't hit at all. But
they did get better as they played. I just felt a little cheated
when I saw another guitar player on stage. Considering their
ages I think they did pretty well. I'm just not going to watch
them do anything else anymore. I prefer to remember them the
way they were in that summer of '76 in front of a more than half
empty gator bowl. Not even half full!! But this was Jacksonville,
the city that banned Elvis and the Doors. Jacksonville where
they booed Jimi off the stage when he opened for the Monkeys.
Stevie Ray Vaughn was booed off the stage when he opened
for Huey Lewis. And Neil Young just got death threats down in
J-ville. But this is a story about the Who. I was ready to rock.
The bill was Labelle, Black Oak Arkansas and the Who. Wasn't
no way I was going to miss this show. Skynyrd had already
screwed me over at the sunshine jam benefit for Jimmy Carter.
(but that's another story for another time) So there were 4 of
us going, me, Mark, James & Ken. We took my van of course.
James and Ken had two baggies of some kinda little white pills.
Screw that! The 6 doobs of Columbian Gold in my pocket was
all I needed. Since James and Ken could barely walk, we dropped
them off in the stands and Mark and I headed for the wall.
Labelle put on a killer show. Back then Patti could really belt
them out. (not that she not still a great singer) BOA were incredable.
Jim Dandy put on such a great show. Years later when I saw David
Lee Roth for the first time, I thought who's this
Jim Dandy wanabe. Of course, at that time, I didn't even know
who Van Halen was. I was at that show to see the Doobies and
the Stones (still another story)
The Who finally came on and they rocked hard! Roger was pissed
and he took it out on the mic all night. Up untill that night
I had never seen a guitar player like Pete live. He totally blew
my face off. John was amazing. And then there's Keith. Thats
why I was there. The original wild man. There are people out
there that don't think drummers matter
Well let me tell
never mind. But yes. The 4 of them up on
stage melting my face off is what I choose to remember
