Here is what is wrong, IMNSHO:
There are far too few consequences for young people's actions -- in school and outside.
We pretend that everyone is college-bound. We long ago stopped preparing students for actual careers -- vocational-technical training -- for students who would benefit from such training and are struggling or failing at the traditional path to college.
I had seniors (seniors!) last sememster with 30, 40 and even 50 absences, and the school system does not want to remove them because we receive FTE money. What a load! We should be helping these students find an environment in which they have a chance to excel, because this isn't it.
Also, we have many students with abysmally low GPAs, but we string them along, also for the FTE money. They would be better served earning their GEDs, because they will NOT be graduating in June. Of course, we can now hang on to some of our high school students until they are 22. 22!
Do you see what is wrong with the system?
