Open the Door Richard.....Jack McVea

when I was young (can't say when I was small...almost 11 pounds at birth)...a neighbor would always call me by this "Open the Door Richard")

I am not familiar with Jack mcVea, although I know he is one of the tune's authors. The version I know best is by Louis Jordan. and I heard my dad sing that refrain years before but never got it until later.

I have more trivia about this tune, but I need to double-check something at home first, and, I see, make major corrections to a wikipedia page (which I have never done before, which must be shocking, seeing as how I am, by my parents' designation, a KIA --know-it all!).

I really did not know much about this song....so I looked it up on Wiki...
It hit the top 10 for about 5-6 different people in a short period of time. This was Count Basie's only top song on the charts, although he had several that almost made it to the top.
It started as a vaudeville act and was a catchphrase for many of the Civil Rights groups way back meaning to let them into many facets of life denied Blacks back inthe day.
It was also recorded by Dylan...if you can believe that.....he called it "Open the Door Homer" although the chorus consisted of the words "Open the Door Richard."

Yes, Louis Jordan is the most recognizable version from back then....even tho others claimed rights and royalties to the song. Jack came up with the tune and used the catchphrase in the earliest version.

Don't know what you know that might change the history of the song.
