The general format for a haiku (although there are many variations) is three lines, 17 syllables. Typically, the structure is: first line = 5 syllables second line = 7 syllables third line = 5 syllables
The Japanese form was designed to call something to memory in 17 short syllables with just enough detail. Reminds me of the famous quote about stories and women's skirts: long enough to cover the subject, but short enough to be interesting.
