Oh, I'm sorry! Did the middle of my sentence interrupt the beginning of yours?

BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT

On Sunday, I was returning from a soccer tournament in Huntsville, Alabama. I flew through Birmingham and had rides to and from Huntsville. I was dropped off at the Birmingham Airport about 3:55. To my amazement (it IS a small airport), there was nobody waiting at the Southwest counter, and very few at the other counters.

As I checked in, the woman mentioned that there was a direct flight to Tampa at 3:40 that had been delayed, and I could get on it for $110. I had a 5:25 flight with a connection in Houston (getting me home at 10:45), but I said no thanks. I walked to security, where maybe thirty people were in line.

But nobody was moving. Everything was at a standstill. Advisors with walkie-talkies were scurrying around, and various police officers came and went. Then they instructed everyone to move toward the other end of the terminal. To another security gate, I figured. Wrong. There isn’t another gate. We were herded outside onto the elevated ramp leading to departing flights, then progressively farther and farther down the road.

Nobody knew anything. The employees outside with us either did not know anything or weren’t saying (the more likely possibility). As time progressed from 4 PM toward 6, the sun was setting and temperature was dropping. We were standing on concrete, most on cell phones or tablets trying to find information. One man said, “It says a cargo plane crashed.” Rumors are so exciting. Several people saw messages about “suspicious luggage.” Still nothing official. We were all concerned for parents with infants and folks in wheelchairs.

A bit after six, we were all permitted inside. The bomb-sniffing dog vehicles had rolled by. Apparently, someone left a note in a restroom saying that a bomb was somewhere in the facility. Since all workers had been evacuated, it took hours to get things in order, and all planes had been diverted from Birmingham in the interim, so few were actually there.

It was clear that I would be able to get to Houston but not back to Tampa. I called Linda and my department head, giving them a heads-up until I got definitive information. But then three great things happened. There were seats available on the direct flight, which had never left. It would not cost me the extra $110. And when they called for passengers, since the boarding passes were meaningless at that point, I was one of the first people called to go on the plane (before all of those who HAD been on the plane before the mechanical delay and then the bomb delay) AND got a window seat in row 2!

And I got home 15 minutes earlier than I was originally scheduled to arrive in Tampa! W00T!
