 Re: Mickey in Pensacola
We went to the MHB show Monday night at the State Theatre in St. Pete. In my mind, I could still visualize that superb set they delivered at Wanee.
I thought the set was flat. It didn't seem to be going anywhere. They opened with a nice reading of "Iko Iko," which led into the best number of the night*. Then they played a so-so "Bertha," followed by two free spacey jams which simply did not gel. I dig Albert Ayler and the Art Ensemble of Chicago, so free is good, but these two segments just didn't move me. We gave it one more song, which was OK, and split after an hour.
I suspect somebody will tell me that the next hour was face-melting, so that's on me. Two other problems. I like the balcony at the State Theatre, but up there the vocals were unintelligible and the lead guitar all but drowned out. The overall level started out good, but after a bit the sound approached a din -- too much of everything competing againast each other.
Next time! I bet they knock it out of the park (like the Tigers!) at Mag Fest!
