anyone remember wqsr?

WQSR was awesome in its time in Tampa (Sarasota, actually). It was the first FM rock station. To that point, we had only WFSO 620 (or was it 570?) AM, which was a great rock station. Imagine hearing "Tales of Topographic oceans" pouring out of your car's cheesy AM radio (because we didn't HAVE FM radio -- OK, most of us didn't). They also played (often) the great Catfish Hodge song "Boogie Man's Gonna Getcha."

WQSR came on right about the time of "Dark Side of the Bong (I mean, Moon)." At times you could hear an entire side of the LP late-night. In fact, they often played album sides. And Steve Huntington did his "Time Warp" series. I STILL remember listening to him doing 1964, and right near the end he played "Candy Girl" by the Four Seasons. I was screaming at the radio (because that's so effective): "If you've got any stones, you'll play the flip side, Huntington!" And sure enough, out poured my favorite Four Seasons song, "Marlena!"

As time progressed, things changed there. Eventually, it became WSRZ, but it still offered a great mix of rock, jazz and other. As a signature peice they played, I would offer: Chris Rea's "On the Beach" (co-written by Neil Young!).

Thank heavens now for WMNF, because the rest of Tampa radio is a wasteland. Thanks for the remembrance, Shaw!

Fernwood Tonight

The precursor to "Fernwood Tonight" was the amazing "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman." And that was followed by another Norman Lear gem that ran only a brief time, but it was absolutely spot-on: "All That Glitters." That is why I suspect it didn't last. The stereotypes hit WAY too close to home.

The Unknown Comic

Legend has it that the unknown Comic had to pass an audition. His joke:

Hey, Chuckie baby! Ever make love to your wife in the shower?

[Barris shakes his head.]

Well, you ought to. She LOVES it!
