The area code had to have a zero or a 1 as the second digit. And zeros and one were not permitted for the first two numbers of the next part.
404-789-5555 was a typical number
243-617-0000 could not have existed before the need for so many more numbers.
I used to give this problem for permutations in Algebra 2, but the answer had to adapt! Pay phones? Actual public telephones that you put a dime in and could call someone all the while touching breathing some stranger's germs! Well my telephone was ringing
